“What scent are you wearing?”
I was slightly taken aback. I thought for a moment my Grab driver was trying to hit on me especially because I was wearing a low-cut midi red dress that revealed a bit of flesh. Though truth be told there was not much to show for it.
“Oh it’s Chanel.” I replied amiably. Very nice was his reply in a manner distinctly Singaporean. Short and succinct.
He wasn’t hitting on me it turns out. In the 10 minute ride it took from my apartment to Joo Chiat, he has shown genuine interest in my life and my well-being during Covid. His delightful personality resonated in the narrow confines of his car. He says he was driving around that afternoon while waiting for his daughter to be through with a birthday party she was invited to. I was surprised to learn he has a 16 year old daughter, and a 15 year old son left at home with mum.
“You must have had them young.” I remark. After a few seconds of mental calculation he figured he had his daughter at 28, not so young he thought. I’m coming up to 31 and childless so I wouldn’t know. With a concerned tone of an elder brother, he advises me not to worry lah, not to force things. Everything happens through fate, including our meeting that afternoon. He tells me that Covid has been a blessing to him, to have his wife and children at home every day. Although when his wife starts to get naggy with chores, not so much.
“She even had the idea to repaint the house! Are you kidding? So I tell her, honey I am essential worker, I’m gonna go out to serve the nation! Then my kids keep calling me while I’m out, they tell me daddy daddy come home quick quick mummy is naggy again please take us out of the house, take us to supermarket!” I chuckle behind my mask at the backseat.
When it was my turn to tell him what I do he tells me “that’s one of the toughest jobs in the world.” I say it’s ok lah, it’s hardly life saving. To which he responds that in a way accountants report on the health of a business, hospitals included so it’s an important job. I relent. I guess if you put it that way.
This man whom I’ve met only briefly had a persona larger than life. He had a way of making one feel good with his amiable demeanour. He brightened up my day with his tale of ordinary family squabbles. His energy was so infectious it left me in a good mood long after I alighted from his car.
It was the kind of energy I actively try to attract and more often than not am typically drawn to – positive, unassuming and generally good energy. May it be from transient encounters or years old relationships. But the law of attraction is not a one way street, you attract only what you give off. If you channel toxic, hateful energy out into the world, the same energy channels its way back to you. Thus I make it a point to examine my thoughts and way of life from time to time. What kind of energy am I giving off?
Anyway, now that I think of it, maybe the scent question was so he could gift his wife the perfume to end her nagging. That would be smart.
Read this first thing in the morning. Happy Vibes.
